About the Book

The Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) is an international, non-profit organization serving over 2,400 members from more than 50 countries. The UHMS is the primary source of scientific information for diving and hyperbaric medicine physiology worldwide, the breadth of which is illustrated in the triennial report, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Indications. With leading experts authoring chapters in their respective fields, this publication continues to provide the most current and up to date guidance and support for scientists and practitioners of hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Indications, currently in its thirteenth edition, has grown in size and depth to reflect the evolution of the literature on the approved use of hyperbarics from both a clinical practice standpoint and insurance coverage perspective. To date, the committee recognizes fourteen indications, including the new indication, idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss.

Additionally, this book continues to be used by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and other third party insurance carriers in determining payment for HBO2 services.

Updates in the Thirteenth Edition

  • Inclusion of the newest HBOT indication approved by the UHMS: idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss
  • Five additional chapters, one new appendix, and two new indexes:
    • Additional chapters are: mechanisms of action of hyperbaric oxygen therapy; pre-treatment and pre-conditioning; randomized control trials of diving & hyperbaric medicine; regulatory considerations for TBI; and a product summary: hyperbaric medicine for post-concussive syndrome
    • New appendix on the approved indications for HBOT
    • A new reference index and a new index of terms
  • This thirteenth edition was professionally published

From the UHMS

From Lindell K. Weaver, M.D. - “As the Chairmen of the Committee that wrote the 13th Edition of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Indications, it is indeed an honor and a privilege to introduce others to this publication. The 13th Edition of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Indications is a comprehensive review of the medical conditions for which there is compelling evidence to support use of hyperbaric oxygen. This new edition has been thoroughly updated since the 12th Edition published in 2008. Also new for the 13th Edition is the professional editing and indexing by Best Publishing Company . . .  I think you will find, as I have, that this most recent edition of a resource that dates back many years continues to be important and helpful.”

John J. Feldmeier, D.O., FACRO, FUHM and President of the UHMS - "The Indications book also called the Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Committee Report has undergone a major upgrade with this publication. It has been professionally formatted, packaged and printed. Every hyperbaric practicing physician should have this on his or her bookshelf and every hyperbaric unit should have a copy at the chamber. I consider this publication the “Merck Manual” for hyperbaric medicine. Word for word, it is the most valuable reference on hyperbaric medicine available."

From Peter B. Bennett, Ph.D., D.Sc. - “In 1972, an ad hoc UHMS Committee was formed to evaluate the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy for specific conditions. A formal Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Committee was formed in 1976 and the first report was published a year later. Since then, new updated editions have been published every 3 years. Each is eagerly awaited by the HBO2 practitioners, third party insurance carriers, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) for the latest evidence and research support for each condition. Their list of approved conditions mirrors those in the book. Every HBO2 therapy center needs to have at least one copy for their library and one for every physician in practice with HBO2 therapy. Previously published in-house, the latest 2014 Edition is published by Best Publishing Company and will be available in print and e-book versions.”
